Lightweight, porous refractories with much lower thermal conductivity and heat-storage capacity than other refractories. Used mostly as backing for brick of higher refractoriness and higher thermal conductivity. These materials provide fuel economy through lower heat losses, increased production due to shorter heat-up time, economy of space (size and weight) because of thinner walls and improved working conditions. Insulating refractories are available as brick or monoliths.
